Rarities: Single-Digit Plates
By the title of this post, you might think I was about to discuss plates with just one letter or number on them. While those are certainly rare, I’m actually talking about plates that have only been issued in single-digit quantities. Less formally, you could say that there’s only a handful out there.
Welcome to ColoPlates – the blog!
This is a blog about license plates.
Sure, I’ll wait while that sinks in.
Having mulled it over, some might think that’s a less than ideal subject to maintain regular interest. Those people – we’ll call them the “naysayers” – would be wrong, of course. Otherwise, I probably wouldn’t have bothered to start it.
Besides, mine isn’t even the first – yes, there are other humans in the world who thought a license plate blog would be a good idea. And just to mix things up, there’s also at least two blogs for those who are interested in license plates for a totally different reason.
But this blog here, this is for the fans. This blog is for those who love seeing plates — or “tags” if you’re in the South — from different places, or in types or designs that you’ve never seen before (or maybe since). This blog is for those who know what the difference is between a “GVW” and a “TVW” plate without having to look it up. (Answers provided at the end if you’re not familiar.)
As the title indicates, this blog will be mainly concerned with Colorado plates, mainly because that’s where I live. But since I’m also a plate collector, and am working on a few different sets, I’ve got lots of info on other jurisdictions as well. For instance, besides my growing Denver County collection of Colorado issues, I’m also working on a set for Lancaster County in Nebraska. But the main goal is to complete a birth year run of all 50 states, for 1979 in my case.
Yes, this is a blog about license plates. See? I wasn’t kidding before.
That said, here’s hoping you enjoy it.
(Answer Key: GVW stands for “Gross Vehicle Weight”. In Colorado, a “GVW” plate is for a GVW-rated truck tractor, while a “TVW” plate is for the GVW-rated trailer behind it. Obscure? Yes. Arcane? Of course. Welcome to the blog — now you can see what you’re in for.)
